🏛️ Joan Kirner
Joan Kirner represented Williamstown in Victoria’s Legislative Assembly from 1988 to 1994 and became the state’s first woman premier in 1990. Her wider work included education reform and the development of Landcare with Heather Mitchell. She continued supporting women’s participation in politics after leaving parliament. Williamstown’s connection is direct parliamentary representation during a substantial part of her leadership career. The community and education centre bearing her name also reflects the continuing local memory of a politician closely associated with education and community participation.
🧵 Frances Burke
Frances Burke was born at Spotswood in 1904 before moving with her family to Brunswick and eventually developing a major career in textile design. Her furnishing fabrics used bold colour and abstract designs based on flowers and native flora. Printing to order allowed popular patterns to remain available for years. Architects including Robin Boyd and Guilford Bell used her textiles, while her shop Good Design sold modern furniture and homewares alongside fabrics. She helped make design a professional practice in Australia, connecting the work of a studio with the rooms in which people lived.
